The below are techniques from other styles of karate which are somewhat adequate for our style.

Shotokan Karate Black Belt Ranks, Titles and Minimum Age Levels applicable to this Dojo:

  • 1st Kyu Brown Belt w/2 stripes - at least 1/2 year before eligible for Shodan.
  • Jun-Shodan Black Belt with one white stripe - maybe eligible at age 13.
  • 1st Dan: Shodan Black Belt (Sempai) - maybe eligible at age 16, having met all requirements satisfactorily.
  • 2nd Dan:  Nidan Black Belt (Sempai) - may be eligible at age 20 or at least 2 years after Shodan.
  • 3rd Dan:  Sandan Black Belt (Sensei) - may be eligible at age 25 or at least 3 years after Nidan.
  • 4th Dan:  Yodan Black Belt (Sensei) - may be eligible at age 30 or at least 4 years after Sandan.

Usually Awarded by ASKKA or International Shotokan Kenkojuku Karate-Do Association

  • 5th Dan:  Godan Black Belt (Renshi or Sensei) - may be eligible at age 35 or at least 5 years after Yodan.
  • 6th Dan:  Rokudan Black Belt (Renshi or Sensei) - may be eligible at age 40 or at least 6 years after Godan.
  • 7th Dan:  Shichidan Black Belt (Renshi or Sensei) - may be eligible at age 50 or at least 7 years after Rokudan.
  • 8th Dan:  Hachidan Black Belt (Kyoshi or Sensei) - may be eligible at age 60 or at least 8 years after Shichidan.

  • Shihan is a title given to a karateka who is a teacher of teachers or a director over several dojos of the same style.
